Futures Position Size Calculator

How many contracts fit the dollars you are prepared to lose if your stop is hit? Pick the contract, enter the stop distance and your risk per trade, and see the arithmetic. Point values come from the same verified list VantageGrid uses to price imported trades.

Everything runs in your browser. Nothing you type is stored, sent or tracked.

Your trade

Points are price units: index points for NQ, MNQ, ES and MES, dollars per barrel or ounce for crude oil and metals, and the price difference for currency futures (0.0020 on 6E).

Optional, like fees and max contracts. Yours or your prop firm's: shows how many full stop-outs at this size fit inside it.

On these numbers

Value of one point, per contract—
Risk per contract at your stop—
Contracts within your risk—
Total risk at the stop—
Full stop-outs before the daily loss limit—
The calculator needs JavaScript; the formula is below.
How this is calculated
  • Risk per contract: stop distance × point value + round-trip fees, rounded up to the cent.
  • Contracts: risk per trade ÷ risk per contract, rounded down to whole contracts, then capped at your maximum if you set one.
  • Stop-outs: daily loss limit ÷ total risk at the stop, rounded down.

It assumes you are filled exactly at your stop. Slippage, gaps and wide spreads can make a real loss larger.

Questions

What is the point value of NQ and MNQ futures?
One NQ (E-mini Nasdaq-100) contract moves $20 per index point; one MNQ (Micro E-mini Nasdaq-100) contract moves $2 per point, 1/10 of NQ.
What is the point value of ES and MES futures?
One ES (E-mini S&P 500) contract moves $50 per index point; one MES (Micro E-mini S&P 500) contract moves $5 per point.
How do I calculate futures position size?
Multiply your stop distance in points by the contract's point value and add your round-trip commission and fees: that is the risk of one contract at the stop. Divide the dollars you are prepared to lose on the trade by that number and round down to whole contracts.
Does the result include slippage?
No. It assumes you are filled exactly at your stop. Fast markets, gaps and wide spreads can fill you worse, so a real loss can be larger than the number shown.

Arithmetic on the numbers you enter, not advice: it does not tell you what to trade or how much to risk. Confirm contract specifications with your broker or the exchange before you trade. VantageGrid is a trade-review journal; it does not execute trades or give signals. For your account's daily-loss and drawdown room, use the prop-firm drawdown calculator.
